The Clients I Help Best

The guys who do best in therapy with me are the ones who are ready to put in the work. They get that it's important to seek professional help because they've already tried dealing with stuff on their own. They realize they need new tools and solutions to get back on track.

Being ready to work means you're ready to be honest, think about how your acting, and try out new ways to handle things. It doesn't mean you have to change right away. First, we need to get to know each other, and figure things out before we can start fixing stuff.

What I'm Like

I'm not some movie therapist. I don't just sit back and nod while you spill your guts. I have a no-bullshit approach – we tackle uncomfortable issues head-on to break through what's holding you back. Whether we're figuring out what's wrong or focusing on what's right, I'm all about making progress.

No need to worry; I'm not here to judge or be an ass. You be you. I'm here to help you discover how to be your best self for a happier life. To do that, I'm fully engaged every time we meet. No clipboard for me; I'm an active part of your treatment. And here's the thing – I enjoy a good laugh. Even in the midst of tough times, we're in this together. Laughter is essential to lighten the mood as we navigate through the heavy stuff.

How I Help You

I use different kinds of therapy to help you. It's not just about asking, "how does that make you feel." My main approach is called Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (learn more). I also mix in other approaches like Strength-Based, Existential, Emotional-Focused, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapies.

I also use Behavioural Therapies, where we don't just talk; we also do stuff. Sometimes, we might even skip the session and go fishing to shake things up and get you out of any rut your stuck in.

Think of my approach like having different tools for different jobs - one might work better for you than the other.

OUR GOAL

No offence, but I hope not to see you again.

My goal - my job - is to give you skills to keep going when life goes sideways. During our time together, we'll chat, find new ways to solve problems, and practice new skills until your confident to do it without me.

That said, the door is always open for you. Life is full of surprises, and you can't prepare for everything. Even if you learn lots of stuff, you might need to come back for a tune up.

Together, we're working to help you understand yourself, take charge, and decide where you want to go in life. We'll keep working until you get there. Once you do, you'll have the hang of it, and won't need my help as much.

About REBT

ABOUT REBT

The adult ABC's

I use Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy often. REBT uses the ABCDEF model. Adverse events trigger emotional responses (Consequences) based on rational and irrational Beliefs. The aim is to Disrupt irrational reactions, instead building Effective rational beliefs to help you Feel better.

Unlike other therapies, REBT explores not just how you think but why. It encourages self-acceptance without judgment and acknowledges that it's okay - even helpful - to have negative emotions. The goal is not to eliminate emotions but to prevent them from controlling your life.

MORE ABOUT PHILL

I know that even with all the nice stuff above, some of you want to know the nitty-gritty details of my background. Does Phill have the life experience to understand where I am at? What has Phill done in his life so far? Does Phill have the education to make this investment worth it?

I get it. You want someone experienced who didn't get their license last week. You want to get in, get it done, and get out. I understand that too, and personally live by that motto. Beyond being a Psychotherapist, I am the Executive Director of a non-profit consultancy company. I - and our incredible team - have grown exponentially over the past 5 years. I am also a professor at Fanshawe College in the Social Service Worker program teaching community development.

I get it when life gets too crazy to handle. I get feeling embarrassed over a tiny slip-up or not giving your all every single time. I get being easily irritated because you hold yourself to high standards, expecting others to appreciate everything you do while snapping at them in return. I get the fear of letting your partner down and doing whatever it takes to avoid feeling that way.

What I've figured out from lots of ups and downs is that running away, dismissing, shutting people out, and disconnecting only makes things worse. I had to learn to be brave enough to be vulnerable with others, be humble with myself, and to forgive myself for not always being perfect but striving to be better. I'm here to guide you through, to help you tackle challenges, and to equip you with the tools to find more happiness in your life.

RECENT CERTIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND EMPLOYMENT

REGISTERED PSYCHOTHERAPIST (QUALIFYING)*

License #13303

College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)

The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) is the governing body for all psychotherapists across Ontario. You must be a registered member of the College to practice the controlled act of psychotherapy.

*As a Qualifying member, I am licensed, can see clients, and run my own private practice. However, I must seek regular supervision (approx. 1 hour for every 4 hours of seeing clients) by an experienced psychotherapists - which I do. Qualifying status is a process that takes 2-5 years to complete - it also means that you're getting two therapists for the price of one.

Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology

School of Behavioural Science

Yorkville University

Yorkville University was one of the first Universities in Canada to be recognized and accredited by the CRPO to offer a degree in Counselling Psychology. The program is two and a half years. Before graduating, I had to complete 53 weeks of skill training, including an 8 month (400 hour) practicum considering one of the most rigorous in Canada.

Executive Director

Vision Us

Vision Us used to be called Prosperity Roundtable, a local initiative focused on educating the public about poverty-related issues. It was me, myself, and I and a two year contract in 2018. We realized that our best bet to address social issues like poverty was to help modernize, scale, and sustain the work of non-profits. I - and my team - have grown the initiative into a successful non-profit consulting company that looks to maximize how neighbourhoods and nonprofits make an impact. We help organizations by being their backbone with new ways to help their clients and prepare them for an ever-changing world. Our unofficial motto is "Stop servicing, start empowering".

Professor

School of Human Services

Fanshawe College

I teach students in the two-year and fast-track program about community development, the practice of sustainable community-driven change. I teach students through a case study method, putting responsibility on them to actively participate in learning and practicing knowledge. My goal is for students to not just learn new skills, but shift their mindset in how they understand the nonprofit sector, how to be more solution-focused as social service workers, and how to be more impactful in the field.

MEUS THERAPY
